Diva

This weekend I was grocery shopping at Publix (where shopping is a pleasure) and came across a package of beef bones in the meat section. I was feeling rather beneficent and bought them so my spoiled house dogs (see above) could have a few moments of visceral pleasure.

We got home, unpacked the groceries and the dogs watched the process with the usual keen interest. When I came across the package of beef bones I said, “Oh, look girls – boneys!” This immediately gets them all excited and dancing around. They followed obediently behind me raced in front of me to the back porch and accepted their meaty, marrowy prizes. I left them to their gnawing.

A few minutes later Danny and I noticed that Ginger was “doing work” (as my 17 yo would say) on her bone, but Diva’s was just sitting there. We further noticed that Diva was just watching Ginger gnawing her bone, waiting for her to put it down so she could take it. Danny said, “The only thing that Diva ever wants is whatever Ginger has at the moment”. I replied, “Diva is missing out on all the pleasure of her bone just for the chance to have Ginger’s leftovers.”

Know anybody dog like that? Hopefully it’s not you, but it might be. There are those of us outside the canine realm who wile away our lives watching what other people have while the amazing gifts of our lives sit right there under our noses, untouched and neglected.

Aspirations are fine.  Work hard, live right and you may get a bigger, meatier, marrowier bone one day.  But today, chew your own bone – you might be surprised that it tastes just as great as someone else’s bone – and less saliva too…
